The BMA seeks a senior Graphic Design Manager in a dynamic Marketing & Communications Division responsible for extensive print and web-based communications. Our ideal candidate is a strong visual designer with a passion for art and museums and extensive experience in taking print projects from concept to completion.
Responsibilities:
The Design Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day workflow for an expanding Creative Services Department and for conceptualizing design solutions as a key part of an integrated museum-wide communications & marketing strategy. S/he reports to the Director of Creative Services and works among a division of 12 marketing and communications professionals.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing design of projects from concept and design to production, printing, and delivery
- Designing exhibition and institutional projects including the quarterly BMA Members magazine, exhibition brochures, Members invitations, streetscape banners, retail products, and marketing direct mail that support and expand the BMA’s brand

Description:
The Baltimore Museum of Art is seeking an experienced museum educator to coordinate, teach, and evaluate its flagship school program Close Encounters at the BMA;ArtQuest at the BMA tour program for summer camps; and assist in the development and implementation of other school programs. The School Programs Coordinatorposition reflects the Museum’s longstanding commitment to delivering memorable and inspiring art experiences to all students, including those in Baltimore city public schools. Responsibilities:
- Under the guidance ofthe Manager of Docent and Tour Programs, develop goals and objectives for Close Encounters, ArtQuest, and other K-12 school programs and initiatives.

Volunteer Opportunity: Education Department, Family FunStop
The BMA is recruiting friendly and outgoing volunteers to staff the BMA’s Family FunStop—an eye-catching “program on wheels” in the Museum’s Visitor Lobby. Volunteers are needed at the FunStop on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The hours are 11-3 on Thursdays and Saturdays; 11-4 on Sundays. A minimum bi-weekly commitment is required, however your schedule is flexible. Shifts are 2-3 hours, depending on your availability.
Volunteering at the FunStop entails greeting and orienting family audiences who visit the Museum and offering them special self-guided programs called FunPacks. There are 3 types of FunPacks and all are designed for families to borrow, use and enjoy together in the galleries, and then return.
Involvement in this program will give you insights into the field of museum education and enable you to serve as an extension of the BMA staff, providing key support for the Museum.

BMA Security Supervisor (Evenings)
Position Responsibilities:
The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is seeking a hands on Security Supervisor who will provide day to day supervision for a team of proprietary security guards. S/he will report to the Security Operations Manager and help to develop and maintain a highly responsive and service oriented team of proprietary security guards, who creates a safe, pleasant, and welcoming experience for all visitors and staff. The position will have a thorough knowledge of security and safety policy procedures designed to insure the safety and security of all collections, visitors, staff and buildings of the Baltimore Museum of Art.
This position will provide relief, training and guidance as needed. The candidate provides positive motivation and coaching for the guard teams, as well as recommends and documents disciplinary action and positive performance coaching. S/he provides general assistance to work colleagues, direct reports, and visitors, as well being proactive in providing a high level of service. The position responds to all alarm conditions and completes reports to document inconsistencies. S/he completes other security related duties as assigned by supervisor.
Responsibilities:
- Serves as Floor Supervisor by providing support, direction, guidance and relief to security staff. Conducts ongoing, random patrols of all galleries and all posts including loading dock, security control and security command center. Maintains working knowledge of emergency preparedness procedures including but not limited to evacuation policy and procedure. Maintains Watch Patrol Guard Tour Systems and trains staff in proper patrol sequence. Displays a thorough knowledge of security related standard operating procedures.
- Produces Daily/Weekly Special Event schedules relative to guard assignments within the museum. Totals and applies chargebacks to appropriate internal departments or external sources for event or escort guard costs. Maintains vacation schedules and employee attendance records. Files and secures all departmental paperwork including but not limited to access registers, property passes, hot work permits, relief logs, and inspection reports.
- Prepares the museum for daily operations by opening and securing museum spaces. Ensures appropriate gallery lighting and decorum.
- Works with computerized integrated security and fire systems including digital video monitoring and recording. Performs arm/disarm, bypass, silence and reset functions on a variety of security and fire system alarm control panels as required to return the facility to normal operating mode.
- Conducts daily roll call to develop a well informed and motivated guard team. S/he maintains records of all guard assignments making adjustments as necessary.
- Completes incident reports, surveys, reviews and signs gallery guard relief schedules, and post inspection reports.
- Responds to unconfirmed reports from the security or fire panel as per dispatch from security command center. Documents systems issues/concerns.
- Climbs ladders, stairs, inspects roof hatches, perimeter doors and performs walk tests of alarm devices. Responds to roofs as required.
- Issues Hot Works Permits as per Department Policy and provides initial and follow up inspections of work site.
- Provides escorts for various operational needs.
- Receives and logs all lost and found property/facilitates return to owner.
- Works overtime, after hours and on weekends as needed.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 2 year college degree preferred. 3 years security related supervisory experience in a museum, cultural property, historic property or hospitality setting required.

Overview:
The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is seeking a hands on, collaborative, and highly visible Security Operations Manager. This candidate will develop a highly responsive and service oriented team of proprietary security guards, who creates a safe, pleasant, and welcoming experience for all staff and visitors. This position will implement security and safety procedures designed to ensure the safety and security of the BMA’s collections, visitors, colleagues and buildings.
The Security Operations Manager reports to the Director of Security and interacts with general public and Museum internal and external stakeholders at all levels. This position is responsible for the direct supervision of a large, diverse, 24/7 guard force operation with 3 direct report shift supervisors. The candidate will assist the Director of Security in attracting, selecting, orienting, educating, and developing an effective security team. The Security Operations Manager will collaborate with Museum colleagues to develop, implement, and evaluate museum security guidelines, policies, and procedures. S/he will foster an environment of continued learning and visitor engagement by collaborating with Museum colleagues to develop and implement a Security Guard pocket manual and other operational manuals and tools that contain standard operating procedures, including security and emergency/disaster response plans.
Responsibilities:
- Provides direct supervision for three Shift Supervisors.
- Oversees the smooth operation of all electronic, computerized, integrated security/fire/cctv systems, data files including watch patrol guard tour program and provides training for staff.
- Oversees department payroll via Administrative Supervisor.
- Assists Director in implementing policy/procedure as necessary to attain full compliance with Suggested Guidelines for Museum Security. Provides Museum Specific Security Guard Training Program, on post training including visitor service/public relations training and documents department training history.
- Assists the Director in monitoring security costs by providing a bi monthly report to address overtime charges.
- Ensures Security Guard Compliance with all Departmental /BMA Policy Guides. Provides reports, conducts remedial discussions to document inconsistent or poor performance. Provides positive coaching and disciplinary action when appropriate.
- Assist Director in planning for, interviewing and selection of Security Guards. Provides evaluation of probationary staff in a timely manner.
- Oversees the acquisition and maintenance of all security Guard related equipment such as uniforms, radios, and watch patrol guard tour system. Collaborates with external contacts and contractors as required.
- Conducts daily walkthroughs of the museum and annex buildings to conduct alarm systems walk tests, identify security and safety risks, assess vulnerabilities in terms of collections security /building issues and recommends remedial action.
- Ensures Supervisory presence during all after hour event activity. Works special events as required. Performs periodic, random site inspections 24/7.
- Ensures that all staff receives appropriate training and posts are equipped with all required equipment to execute assigned duties.
- This position is on call and will respond to the museum as required or render guidance 24 hours/7 days a week/365 days a year in the event that the Director of Security is unavailable. Incumbent will be expected to work regularly on weekends and additional hours as needed.
Qualifications:
- A College degree in a management and or security related field with a minimum of 5 years experience or 10 years progressive management experience, preferably in a museum, historic property, cultural, or hospitality setting is required. Proven record of managing a large, diverse operation. Prior experience conducting a formal training program is also required.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, planning and organizational skills: excellent written and oral communication skills; training, presentation, negotiation, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
- Thorough working knowledge of integrated security / fire systems and related technology.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse public, colleagues, and external contacts.

Manager of Family Learning, Education Division
Overview:
The Baltimore Museum of Art is seeking a creative and dynamic individual to develop, implement, and evaluate all aspects of family and intergenerational learning at the Museum and in the community. The Manager of Family Learning is a newly created position that reflects the Museum’s commitment to delivering memorable and inspiring experiences with works of art to families throughout Baltimore. Working within a team-based environment, this position is responsible for initiating, designing, and presenting programs and interpretive materials that engage families in learning together. He or she collaborates with colleagues in education, curatorial, marketing and communications, membership, development, facilities, and visitor services to foster a seamless and integrated experience for family visitors and encourage repeat visitation. Responsibilities:
Work with the Director of Visitor Learning to develop goals, strategies, and tactics for enhancing family and intergenerational learning at the Museum.
- Plan and oversee family programs including festival and community days, studio workshops, Family Tours, and Family Sundays.
- Write, design, and produce interpretive tools for families including hands-on learning resources and spaces, self-guiding materials, family packs, and family-focused audio tours.

Curator of Contemporary Art
The BMA is seeking a dynamic Curator of Contemporary Art to join a 10-member curatorial team in an institution with a long history of achievement in collecting and exhibiting modern and contemporary art. The BMA has a wing dedicated to contemporary art where objects from its fine collection including painting, sculpture, print, drawings, photographs, and new media are exhibited. Recent acquisitions include major works by Olafur Elliasson, Kerry James Marshall, Thomas Hirschhorn. In addition to a major retrospective on Austrian sculptor Franz West which opens October 2008, other past exhibitions include two widely admired shows Slide Show and Work Ethic, and a current series of smaller project shows organized within the Contemporary collection galleries.
The Curator of Contemporary Art will oversee post-1960 art. He or she will enhance the collection and nurture a vibrant community of collectors and artists through exhibitions, public programs, and publications of scholarly significance. Baltimore benefits from a significant community of visual and performance artists in an increasingly vital collaboration with the city’s cultural institutions, including the nationally ranked Maryland Institute College of Art and a remarkable number of other strong academic institutions. Curator of African Art
Overview:
The BMA is seeking a dynamic and innovative Curator and Department Head for African Art to join an 11-member curatorial team in an institution with both an impressive collection of African objects and a strong record of scholarship and major African art exhibitions. Directing the Department for Arts of Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific Islands, the curator will oversee the BMA’s extensive collection of over 2,000 African objects including textiles. The curator reports to the Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs. The Department is staffed with a part time Associate Curator for Ancient American Art, a Curatorial Assistant, plus work study students and interns as direct reports. The curator will be responsible for formulating plans for a new installation of the African collection in collaboration with education and exhibition design and installation colleagues to develop new approaches for display and interpretation based on the commitment of delivering memorable and inspiring experiences with works of art to a broad and diverse public.
S/he will work with a dedicated group of collectors, including the support group, The Friends of the Arts of Africa, The Pacific, and the Americas. The Director of Visitor Learning is a newly created position that reflects The Baltimore Museum of Art’s commitment to delivering memorable and inspiring experiences with works of art to a broad and diverse public. Reporting to the Deputy Director for Education, this position collaborates with colleagues in Marketing & Communication, Curatorial, Finance, Development, and Facilities and Operations to develop and implement museum goals and strategy. The Director of Visitor Learning supervises the Interpretation Manager, Manager of Docent and Tour Programs, Manager of Family Learning, and the Tour Coordinator, developing synergy across departmental areas.
This position is the leader on key education initiatives and reviews all departmental outputs to ensure they meet desired outcomes and learning objectives. The Director of Visitor Learning will oversee the conceptualization, design, and implementation of in-gallery and web-based interpretive tools. This position is responsible for designing and implementing an evaluation and research program with the goal of enhancing visitor learning and engagement with works of art. - Design and implement an ongoing evaluation and research program to better understand how and what visitors learn in the museum. Document and share findings with museum staff and the museum field at large through conference presentations, articles, reports, white papers, and staff programs.

The successful Custodian will be friendly and detail-oriented. The candidate will have a passion for cleaning and serving people. S/he will be able to work both independently and on a team. The candidate will have a minimum high school degree or GED. A minimum of one year of custodial and customer satisfaction experience will be a plus.
