Director's Welcome

Much is afoot—literally—at the BMA! Matisse’s Dancers offers us all a remarkable opportunity to delve into this great French master’s exploration of dance and movement. The show brings together works on paper completed over the last several decades of Matisse’s career, from finished drawings to an exceptional series of lithographs where the artist suggests movement with a few well chosen lines. This is an example of an exhibition that could only happen at the BMA: conceived by longtime BMA Curator Jay Fisher, developed with the cooperation of Matisse’s family, and selected from the Museum’s internationally renowned collection of the artist’s work.
In addition, we continue to present the best contemporary art! This year’s much anticipated Baker Artist Awards features a range of media—wooden sculpture, digital photography, banjo music, and more—all reminders of the vibrant creative community that has made Baltimore a nationally recognized arts center.
Members will be the first to experience the Contemporary Wing when it reopens in November, transformed after a nearly two-year renovation. See your favorite works gleam under state-of-the-art lighting. Discover new additions to the collection and a new exhibition series that showcases the freshest art and ideas in the world today. We are creating innovative new experiences for you to engage with the art of our time. Don’t miss the BMA’s new mobile art guide. You will be able to carry the Museum in your pocket!
Celebrate with us this fall—at the reopening of the Contemporary Wing or any other day at the BMA! There is always something new to see!
