Adventurous travelers Harvey and Phyllis Schreter collected art in Papua New Guinea during the 1970s. Orator’s stools were essential fixtures inside Iatmul men’s ceremonial houses, where a speaker would address his audience from near the impressive sculpture, striking or laying leaves upon its seat for rhetorical emphasis.
