La Gerusalemme liberata (“Jerusalem Delivered”), by the 16th-century Italian poet Torquato Tasso, inspired not only the Van Dyck painting, but also numerous other paintings, as well as plays, operas, and madrigals. Andrew Talle, Chair of Musicology at the Peabody Institute, brought Peabody faculty and students to perform musical interpretations of the poem at the BMA. The performance, shown here, offered a new perspective on the painting to participants in this seminar.
