Since the 1950s, the Emory fund has added many fine American and European paintings to the collection. The latest, vigorously painted with a palette knife, recalls Gustave Courbet’s realism. Picknell’s monumental landscape garnered praise at the 1881 Paris Salon as “superb…one of the most remarkable pictures” among thousands on view.
