African-American History Month Family Day

Join us for a celebration of African-American history and culture inspired by the BMA’s collection of African-American art. Enjoy performances by DishiBem Traditional Contemporary Dance Group and Illstyle & Peace Productions, take guided tours, explore motion in art through painting and drawing, and become enraptured by Debra Mims’ grand tales.
1:30 p.m. – Illstyle & Peace Productions
This multicultural dance company focuses on the movement and spirit of old school hip-hop by fusing it with other styles of dance and delivering a positive message of individual expression.
2-5 p.m. – Family Workshop
Explore motion through art activities!
2:30 p.m. – Gallery Tours
Learn about the BMA’s collection of African and African-American art through guided tours
3:30 p.m. – DishiBem Traditional Contemporary Dance Group
Enjoy an original performance inspired by the BMA’s collection of African-American art. DishiBem fuses West African and American dance and music.
4:30 p.m. – Storytelling – Hear tales from storyteller Debra Mims.

Join Dr. Paul Taylor, Professor of Philosophy at Temple University and author of the forthcoming Black is Beautiful: A Philosophy of Black Aesthetics, for a discussion on the meaning of black aesthetics in the 20th century and beyond.
