Contemporary Art
The Contemporary Art Wing is closed for a major renovation and will reopen in fall 2012. Read below for details about the exciting changes taking place.

The 16 galleries in the 35,000 square-foot Contemporary Art Wing are currently undergoing a major transformation designed to enhance visitors' experience with contemporary art and will reopen in fall 2012.
Since its founding, the BMA has been exhibiting and collecting works by contemporary artists, resulting in an impressive collection of 20th- and 21st-century art displayed in a 1994 addition to the Museum.
When it reopens in fall 2012, the re-envisioned Contemporary Art Wing will encourage visitors to explore the collection thematically and rediscover their favorite artworks juxtaposed with powerful new acquisitions, such as Untitled (bicycle shower) by Rirkrit Tiravanija and Live Ball by Nari Ward. The BMA is also the first major American institution to acquire a site-specific work by Sarah Oppenheimer, whose groundbreaking installation invites visitors to experience different moments of art history simultaneously through meticulously crafted sculptural forms placed in the floor, ceiling, and walls.
Two new exhibitions will make their debut in conjunction with the reopening. Large-scale color photographs by South African artist Zwelethu Mthethwa will inaugurate a new project space for works by international, regional and local artists. A black box gallery presenting the latest video and digital artworks will feature A Man Screaming is Not a Dancing Bear by the acclaimed artist collaborative Allora & Calzadilla. Another dedicated gallery will showcase the BMA's exceptional holdings of prints, drawings, and photographs, which ranges from pieces by Diane Arbus and Cy Twombly to works by Edward Burtynsky and Rachel Harrison.
