Matisse as Printmaker
October 25, 2009–January 3, 2010

Discover Matisse's brilliance and versatility as a printmaker through nearly 200 rarely shown prints.
From the artist's earliest prints in 1900 to the last in 1951, Matisse as Printmaker follows the chronology of the artist's career with examples of every printmaking technique he used-etchings, monotypes, lithographs, linocuts, aquatints, and color prints. A selection of related paintings, sculpture, drawings, and books such as Poésies de Stéphane Mallarmé and Jazz reveal how Matisse used prints to develop his visual ideas.
This comprehensive exhibition culminates with several striking aquatints from 1948. Many of these vivid prints are from a promised gift to the BMA from the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation and are being shown in Baltimore for the first time.
A full color illustrated catalog published by the American Federation of the Arts includes an essay by BMA Curator Jay McKean Fisher exploring Matisse's use of printmaking throughout his career. Available at The BMA Shop for $25. BMA Members receive a 10% discount!
Matisse as Printmaker is curated by Jay Fisher, Deputy Director for Curatorial Affairs and Senior Curator of Prints, Drawings & Photographs.
This presentation unites works drawn from the collection of The Baltimore Museum of Art with Matisse as Printmaker: Works from the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation, a traveling exhibition organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation.
