Nelson and Juanita Greif Gutman - Biographical Note

Nelson Gutman was born June 21st, 1879. He served as president of his father’s department store, the Julius Gutman & Co., Inc. in Baltimore for 24 years. He died in Baltimore August 16th, 1955.

Juanita “Nita” Greif was born July 16th, 1881. She married Nelson Gutman in 1909. Together they collected books, French posters and works by artists such as Picasso on their frequent trips to Europe. Their poster collection is a particularly important part of the collection of The Baltimore Museum of Art. Mrs. Gutman died September 5th, 1963. Mrs. Gutman’s sister, Lillian Greif, was also a donor to the BMA.

Scope and Contents

The Nelson and Juanita Grief Gutman Papers measure .4 linear feet and date from 1911 to 1962, with most of the material spanning 1936 to 1957. They contain correspondence, invoices, clippings, photographs and other material related to the Gutmans’ art collection and its donation to the Baltimore Museum of Art. They document Mr. and Mrs. Gutman’s collecting, particularly in Paris during the 1930’s and after World War II.

Scope and Contents

Series 1, Purchase Files, contains correspondence, invoices, receipts, shipping documents, catalogs, clippings, and notes related to the Gutmans’ purchases of works for their collection.

The Baltimore Museum of Art material contains receipts for loans and gifts to the Museum, correspondence from curators and the Director about donations, lists of insurance values for works in exhibitions, a copy of the catalog, Toulouse-Lautrec: Posters and Other Lithographs from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Gutman (1951), and a separate file of clippings that were found with this material. The clippings relate to exhibitions at the BMA and also include write-ups on the Gutmans’ collection in The Sun.

Most of these materials are filed by the name of the dealer or gallery. Material relating to several purchases of works by Jacob Epstein (the British sculptor) was found separated when the collection was processed and has been filed separately.

Series 2, Photographs, contains mainly photographs of works in the Gutmans’ collection. Also included are a lovely portrait of a young Mrs. Gutman by Bachrach Studios and a snapshot of the sculptors Aristide Maillol and Ernst Barlach in Berlin.

Collection Catalogue   0.05 Linear feet ; .13 boxes.

Series 3, Collection Catalog, contains one binder titled, Catalogue of Old Silver, Bronzes, Prints, Posters Etc.: Collection of Juanita Greif Gutman and Nelson Gutman, Owings Mills, Maryland. The binder has alphabetic tabs and the first page of each is marked with a list of the contents in that section. For example, “F” lists, FORAIN (JEAN LOUIS), FLOWER PRINTS, FRENCH PRINTS, FASHION PLATES, and FRANKLIN. The individual descriptions for the works are limited to artist name, title, size and a few other general details. For some, the price the Gutmans paid is written in pencil in the margin or typed with the description. The catalog includes see references. Two small loose dealer catalogs. Several pages that had been moved out of order for research that was done when the Gutman Collection came to the BMA were returned to their original location during processing.
