Scope and Contents

Annual Reports and Strategic Plans contains the Museum's annual reports from 1931, 1991-1996, 2001-2005, and 2007. Other annual reports were published as part of The Baltimore Museum of Art Member's Calendar and  Record - The Baltimore Museum of Art. Notations about this have been made in the finding aid under the title of the publication. Researchers should note that for many years no annual reports were published. The subseries also contains the Museum's strategic plan written in 2003.

SERIES 2. EXHIBITION PUBLICATIONS AND COLLECTION CATALOGUES   45.0 Linear feet  (97 boxes, 1 oversize box, 1 shelf of oversize material)

Scope and Contents note

The Recurring Exhibitions Subseries includes catalogs of exhibits that occurred on a regular basis such as the Maryland and Regional Artists Exhibitions, the Salon of Photography, the Baltimore Water Color Club exhibits, and the Baltimore Museum Antiques Show. The Baltimore Water Color Club Exhibitions took place at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Maryland Institute, the Peabody Institute and other locations around the city. Only the catalogs for the exhibitions that took place at the BMA are included in the Publication Collection.

The General Subseries contains catalogs and other publications relating to exhibitions and the Museum's collections. Material is arranged by date based either on the year in which the exhibit opened or for collection catalogs, the year of publication. If there are multiple publications for a single exhibition, for example a catalog, a checklist and a pamphlet, the publications are filed together and notation is made in the finding aid as to the nature of the publication. Because the Museum was undergoing renovations at the time, the only materials published in 1980 were checklists that accompanied traveling exhibitions in Maryland.

Exhibition of Paintings by Ernest L. Blumenschein. Buffalo, NY: The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy, Albright Art Gallery, 1927.   1.0 copy

Note

It is unclear if this is the catalogue for the Blumenschein exhibition held in Baltimore. The cover of the pamphlet indicates that it is from the exhibition at the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo in October 1927. BMA records are limited for 1927, but it appears that the exhibition was indeed held in Baltimore in March of that year. According to the exhibition calendar in the March 15, 1927 edition of The Art Digest, the exhibition did take place from March 8- April 3rd. It is likely that this was a travelling exhibition that went on to Buffalo.

SERIES 5. EPHEMERA   10.0 Linear feet  (17 boxes, 2 oversize boxes)

Scope and Contents

The Ephemera Series contains miscellaneous printed materials such as pamphlets describing the BMA's collection, brochures for public programs, postcards, membership forms, floor plans, invitations to exhibition openings, certificates honoring the BMA, and teacher packets.

Much of the material in the series has been either collected from various manuscript or archives collections that contained duplicate copies or through the conscious effort of staff to keep such material as it comes into the Library. Some material was transferred from the Creative Services Department as they cleared out old storage spaces and more recently, Creative Services has been regularly transfering materials from past fiscal years to the Archives. For this reason, the material before 2003 is arranged by year and the material after that is arranged by fiscal year (July 1 - June 31) to reflect the order in which they were received in the Archives.

The series is arranged by chronologically and further by the type of material within each year. Some years only have a few types of material and some years have no material at all. This does not necessarily indicate that nothing was published in these years, just that the Archives does not have any material for that year in its collection. Where material spanned two different years, they are filed with the earlier year. For example, a calendar of children's programming for fall 1967 through winter 1968 would be filed under 1967.
