Woodcut with transparent washes, applied through stencils
British Museum, London

A colorist painted this impression of the woodcut using three different stencils, one for the application of each color. The stencils were crudely cut and the paints hastily applied, suggesting that a large number of copies were colored and then cheaply sold.
Why were so many of these images made?
See how stencils were created and used to color the print.
