| This large landscape etching depicts three pilgrims on their way to Emmaus, a village outside of Jerusalem. The halo above the head of the center figure distinguishes him as the risen Christ, an identity unknown to his two companions. The print is based on a drawing Pieter Bruegel made as he traveled through the Alps to Italy. Basing the biblical scene within an Alpine landscape suggests, however, that the depiction of the landscape was more important than the religious content of the print. |
