Friedrich Arnold Brockhaus (German, 1722-18230 founded publishing firm Rohloff & Co in Amsterdam (1805; renamed 'Kunst und Industrie Comtoir' two years later); in 1808, bought the right to publish the then bankrupt 'Conversations-Lexikon' (a German encyclopedia now known as the Brockhaus Enzyklopädie). Returned to Germany in 1810 and moved his firm which had been renamed 'F. A. Brockhaus' in 1814) to Leipzig in 1818. After his death the business was carried on by his sons Friedrich (1800-1865, retired in 1850) and Heinrich (1804-1874), then by the latter's sons, Eduard (1829-1914) and Rudolf (1838-1898). After World War II the firm was moved to Wiesbaden and in 1984 it was merged with the Bibliographic Institut to form the BIFAB
