"1776" soup plate is a design from the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Porcelain Service. Porcelain with enamels and gilt decoration. The colors were applied using chromolithographic and decalcomania processes. Afterwards, decorators painted the plate with enamel colors to add shading and to enhance the design. Finally, the edges were gilt. The shape of the soup plate was modeled after the mountain laurel, with slight points indicating the tips of the flower petals. The design features a large Colonial hearth in a New England home roaring with a fire as a large meal cooks away. A swinging crane with hooks holds a cast-iron kettle and Dutch oven over the heat as a gray cat watches on. To the left, stands a tall clock, and an iron door in the brick hearth indicates a bake oven. Two skewered roasted beets, still covered in ash, rest against a spider to cool. The surrounding decor includes Blue Willow plates and a pewter candlestick on the mantle shelf. Suspended on the wall above is a flint-lock rifle, a bullet pouch, and a powder horn.
