While pursuing his artistic studies at the Académie Julian in Paris in the first decade of the 20th century, Baltimorean Charles Walther was introduced to the modernist styles of the Fauvist and Cubist artists. Much of his earlier work, in its expressive use of color and flat, somewhat abstracted imagery, reflects these formative influences. In his later years, Walther became a leading exponent of non-objective art imparting to his compositions the dynamic motion and geometry associated with the Futurist and Constructivist movements. Here, the artist depicts a plant on a tabletop in a simple, subdued interior. Its lack of blossoms, cropped foliage and earthenware pot, uneven and discolored by age, bring a distinct modesty to the image.
