=The squash-blossom design is frequently found on 'O'odham baskets. The number of woven petals varies from three to twelve, or more. Proper balance and the spacing of the petals create a striking design. The coils and light brown ground are created with tule stem and willow. Devil's claw, a pronged seed pod, is used to create the black design. The dried pod is softened by soaking and the black fibers are stripped from the outside for use (photo).
