This bust portrait, likely undertaken after Baudelaire’s death, was based on an image by the prominent French photographer Nadar. Here the writer’s head and shoulders stand out against a subtly toned background. In later versions of the print, as a reminder of the writer’s passing, Manet added a dark backdrop, an elaborate scroll with Baudelaire’s name, and an entwined flower.
