A nearly square sampler with plain-woven linen ground embroidered in multicolored silk threads. At the center is a coat of arms, probably of the city of Amsterdam (the Netherlands) including a shield (possibly originally red, but now golden) with a black stripe in the middle (representing the Amstel River). The black stripe is ornamented with three X-shaped (St. Andrew's or saltire crosses) representing the symbol of Amsterdam from c. 1419. The Imperial Crown of Austria is shown atop the shield (added in 1498) and two lions rampant are depicted on either side (added in the 16th century). Other motifs include wreaths with crowns and initials. A man (possibly with a falcon), and a woman, each standing to one side, may represent a marriage couple. A motif identified as "a Dutch maiden with the cap of liberty in the Garden of Holland" (a woman holding a pole with hat in one hand and a tulip in the other), angels, the Spies of Canaan, and two very interesting buildings are also present. The Latin word " Anno" (Latin for "In the year of") is stitched above the coat of arms and the date "1808" beneath coat of arms. The sampler is bordered on all sides with a thin green chevron (zig-zag) pattern with decorative stitches added at every peak and valley of the line, alternating in color between green and white. Multiple colors of silk embroidery threads are used in the sampler, including blue, green, lt. green, black, white, beige, dark grey, taupe, red, dark gold, cream, lt. blue, lt. yellow, and possibly lt. brown. Many colors are strong, but in some cases, the colors are not easy to distinguish due to lack of contrast. The ground linen is finished with two thin woven blue lines on both selvages. The top and bottom edges of the linen ground are folded under (several times) and hemmed with hand stitches. The linen is plain woven with uneven yarns including 34 warps per inch and 42 wefts per inch.
