Both of these masks are entertaining performers, but in the past they were also seen as sacred dwelling places for forest spirits that blessed Dan communities. The mask with high cheekbones, small eyes and nose, and full lips is likely a Tankë Ge, or dance mask. Its fine features and shining surface are feminine marks of beauty, although it is neither male nor female. A performer wearing this mask would dance intricate steps, sing songs, and recite poetry to please the crowd. The mask to the right, with its projecting jaw covered in fur, was used in the bird masquerade, Gegon, which is performed only in the northern part of Dan territory. The dancer mimes the movements of a hornbill, traditionally thought of by the Dan as the first creature made by God.
