The decoration depicts figures who are associated with astronomy. One scene features the master horse expert who was called Bole. In recognition of his ability to discern horses’ superior qualities, the master was given the name of the constellation which was thought to govern heavenly horses. (This constellation is known to us as Scorpio). Here Bole stands with three horses beside a river. The back of the bowl is painted with the Ox-Herd and Spinning Maiden, who represent the stars Altair and Vega.
