After producing glass at a number of New York venues, Louis Comfort Tiffany finally founded his own glassmaking firm in 1892. His factory, called Tiffany Furnaces, was located in Corona, Queens, New York. It was managed by Arthur J. Nash, a skilled glassworker who had emigrated from England. Shields such as this one could be hung from one of Tiffany’s large glass shades, further cutting and coloring the light while adding a whimsical naturalistic touch. Dragonflies were a popular Art Nouveau motif.
