This posthumous cast is a surmoulage—a bronze cast made using another bronze, in this case, most likely the version on view in the first gallery of this exhibition, as its model. This bust at one time belonged to the Lucas Brothers firm, the company founded by the father of George Lucas, Fielding Lucas. We know this cast was made at S. Klaber & Co. Founders, New York, after 1909, so the cast from the Lucas Collection, a sandcast exhibited in the Paris Salon, must have been sent to this foundry to serve as the model for this second cast.
