Héreau began his professional career as an architect but turned to painting and printmaking in 1855, exhibiting at the Salons from 1865 until his death in 1879 in a railroad accident. His subjects are mainly bucolic farm scenes of which Lucas acquired three examples in oil. During the Paris Commune of 1871, Héreau played a key role in assuring the safety of works of art in the museums of Paris.
