With "Side by Side", publisher Ambroise Vollard hoped to produce a “painter’s book,” one with artistically inspired images rather than literal depictions of the text. Pierre Bonnard’s lush and loosely drawn compositions, based on photographs he took of his companion and model Marthe, spread beautifully across the page, weaving around Paul Verlaine’s poems about love and sexuality and creating a harmonious combination of image and text. The first section, called “Les Amies,” contains a compilation of six lesbian love sonnets that Verlaine wrote in 1867.
