A metal band was placed over this bowl’s unglazed rim to protect it from being damaged and improve its appearance. Many bowls of this type were fired upside down, resting on unglazed rims, which reduced warping in the kiln’s heat. This method allowed for more bowls to be packed into the firing chamber which increased the kiln’s output and reduced fuel costs. Jingdezhen kilns also took full advantage of using molds to shape and decorate bowls in one step, another means of economizing production.
