This magnificent chalk drawing, animated by an astonishing variety of decorative patterns, embodies all the brilliance of new ideas that emerged for the artist during the 1920s. In a manner similar to polishing the surface of a sculpture, Matisse manipulated the chalk with an estompe, a tool made of rolled paper. This tool erased or thinned the chalk on the surface of the paper and allowed the brilliant quality of the white paper to become an active part of the image. He achieved a broad range of tones within the limited palette of a chalk drawing.
