Using the English salts (case nos. 7,10) as models, Kirk and Son, Baltimore’s leading silversmith by the mid-19th century, made two duplicates (case nos. 8, 11) for the family whose unidentified crest emblazons all four vessels.
This salt, and its mate (case no. 10) were made by an English silversmiths, but the hallmarks are so worn from polishing that they can no longer be clearly read.

Markings: part of maker's mark is visible on the underside where is was stamped "S.K." (for "S. Kirk & Son")
