While a student in Rome in the mid-1820s, Corot painted out-of-doors as a preliminary step for preparing his “finished” paintings in his studio. The distinction between these two phases of his creative process would gradually diminish, and he would find a ready market for both oil sketches and his more developed studio works.
In this view, one looks down the Brancas road extending from Ville d’Avray, the location of Corot’s family house, through Sèvres and Brimborion on the Seine River towards Paris in the distance.
