In this painting, Henriette Darricarrère, Matisse’s favorite
model for most of the 1920s, is clothed only in a pair of
striped harem pants. The mirror shows her from two
angles, almost doubling the pattern of her garment in
the composition. The artist’s fascination with all types of
designs can be seen in the background, as he juxtaposed the
red tile floor with the blue-and-white gingham chair and the
textile from northern Africa hanging on the wall.
Matisse and Darricarrère met in Nice, France, while she was
working in the film industry. A trained dancer, her athletic
abilities allowed her to hold difficult poses for long painting
sessions.
