When punch was ladled from a large serving bowl, a practical strainer kept unwanted bits of fruit and spices or other flavoring agents out of the drinker’s cup. Working in Philadelphia, John Bayly endowed this example with great elegance by piercing a graceful floral pattern of holes to let the punch run through. The handle was cut out of a sheet of solid silver and applied to the strainer.
Markings: Underside of handle, stamped: "I.B" Underside of handle etched: "S" and "F" (probably initials of owner)
