Here Matisse sketches a series of five portraits of Baudelaire, moving from the three-quarter view he developed earlier to the frontal view that he ultimately chose for the published illustration. The portrait at the upper right of the sheet is the most resolved artistically. In it, the artist has developed Baudelaire’s characteristic features most completely and settled on the intense, grimacing affect of the final published portrait.
