Bouguereau trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later studied in Italy from 1850 to 1854. His figural works, often portraying historical, religious, or mythological subjects, were greatly admired by his patrons for their technical proficiency and sentimentality. This study was undertaken for a larger work now lost.
