Committed to recording contemporary life as seen in his Breton Woman Blowing the Dinner Horn in the first gallery, Hovenden presents in this diminutive work a starkly realistic portrayal of an unadorned, elderly woman. An inscription by Lucas on the reverse indicates that the painting was a gift from the artist.
