One of the earliest artists to paint nature “from life,” Flers
made frequent visits to Barbizon and the surrounding Forest
of Fontainebleau. Although he generally chose to depict the cottages,
farmlands, ponds and rivers of the region, he portrays in this striking
image a broad plain and the sky above as the sun is setting. Barely
visible at the horizon are diminutive figures and landscape elements
that serve to define the space.
An inscription on the reverse of this painting indicates that it was
formerly in the collection of Napoleon III, Emperor of France from
1852 to 1870.
