Farming was the economic force of the newly independent American nation in the early 19th century. This massive cream pot champions agricultural production. Rows of wheat line the rim and central frieze, where pigs, ducks, dogs, and birds freely roam among resting tools and gathered sheaves. This harvest imagery is supported by the four feathered legs and the sharp talons of an eagle balancing on balled feet, symbols of strength and stability. New York silversmith William Thomson is recognized for his inventive interpretation of classical forms and decorative schemes that visualize empire and prosperity.
