Based on Manet's painting, The Smoker, 1866 (The Minneapolis Institute of Arts; Rouart and Wildenstein 112). According to Fisher, although this impression "from the Lucas collection is designated by that collector as a modern impression from Dumont, its atypical paper and the strong quality of the drypoint lines, somewhat exaggerated by inking, suggest that it might be one of the Guerard proofs from Manet's lifetime."
