Small figures attired in textured ceremonial garb are the detailed work of Veracruz ceramicists who created sculpture from the combined techniques of molds, appliqué and hand modeling. Variously described as ritual dancers or warriors, this figure type is notable for its facial scarification and claw hand. Its loincloth knot indicates noble rank. The figure would have had an equally elaborate, removable headdress.
