This elaborately framed depiction of the Houses of Parliament focuses on a stately view of the monumental mass of the Parliament buildings. The urban context is amplified by Buhot’s “symphonic margins,” which extend his subject’s meaning. These fanciful
vignettes draw our attention to the edges of the composition, rather than allowing us to fix on the primary subject as in a standard topographic view.
