Among the Yurok and other groups of northern California, women wore basketry hats as a part of their daily dress. The hat represented some of their finest weaving. If you look under the rim, you will see that there is no design on the hat's interior. This effect is created with half-twist overlay twining: two wefts are twined as a pair (photo) and given a half twist as they pass around each warp. The outer weft always appears on the surface of the basket, creating the design.
