Take a closer look at this landscape. You may notice that the
mountains in the background are not made from stone but from
piles of garbage held together by netting. Using the technique
of photomontage, Yao Lu combined digital images of natural and
artificial forms to construct an image inspired by the layered
perspective and composition of traditional Chinese landscape
painting. In the use of trash to shape the natural landscape, the
artist was commenting on the harmful impact of our increasingly
disposable culture on the environment and the loss of knowledge
around ancient traditions and practices.
