Maitreya is the anticipated successor to Sakyamuni, the Historical Buddha. He is worshipped as a bodhisattva, a buddha-to-be or one who has achieved enlightenment but remains in the world to assist others. This depiction wears a long strand of pearls, lion skin over his left shoulder, and crown shaped like a stupa, which is a domed or tiered Buddhist shrine.
