The textile design may originally have been inspired by Turkish velvets brought to Russia in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as well as Turkish embroideries. But Bakst‘s luxurious colors, contrasted with a white (also available in black) ground, and his stylization of the motifs have resulted in a modern interpretation.
