A talented graphic artist working in London, Lewis Day designed not only fabrics but also magnificent clocks with richly carved architectural cases and beautifully painted ceramic dials and panels. Here, the case is English but the works are French, an indication of cross-Channel commerce. Day’s richly patterned instrument for measuring time invites poetic exploration of the West’s love affair with blue and white ceramics from Asia that began hundreds of years earlier.
