Vignon's work forms a link between the realistic style of the Barbizon School and the more free and immediate paintings of the Impressionists. A student of Camille Corot in the late 1860s, Vignon befriended both Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne during the 1870s, and exhibited in four of the eight Impressionist exhibitions. His landscapes and still lifes are marked by broken brushwork and a light, colorful palette, placing him well within the ranks of the avant-garde in late 19th-century France.
