A student of Camille Corot in the late 1860s, Vignon forms a link between the artists of the French Barbizon School and the Impressionists. During the 1870s, he befriended both Camille Pissarro and Paul Cézanne and exhibited in four of the eight Impressionist exhibitions. Vignon's landscapes and still lifes for which he is best known are marked by broken brushwork and a light, colorful palette placing him well within the ranks of the avant-garde in late 19th century France.
